So much has happened in 2025 already. From the U.S. election to trade wars, and now the
Canadian Federal election, it’s hard to keep track of what the heck is going on and what the heck
it means for you. We’ve got the scoop on what it means for Canada’s design and construction
sector and how we’re here to help keep your cottage renovation dreams come true and stick
within your budget.
So what is the deal with these tariffs?
As you know, back in March, the U.S. government imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian-made
goods, and in response, Canada hit back with counter-tariffs on American-made products. So
what exactly does this mean for you? Some products sourced from U.S. manufacturers might
suddenly have a hefty price tag. But before you start cancelling your cottage renovation plans,
we’ve got news for you.
We know what you’re thinking: “Does this mean my new sofa is 25% more expensive?”
No, not necessarily, the country of origin plays a huge (and very beneficial) role here. Tariffs
only impact American-made goods. So, if your sofa is made in the U.S., then yes, it might come
with a bigger price tag. The good news? If it’s sold by a U.S. company but manufactured
elsewhere where then it is not subject to tariffs. This is probably the only time an origin story has
a happy ending; no villains here.
The So What is Economics
Prior to the Canadian Federal election, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association stated that the
tariffs could put more pressure on housing affordability. Prices won't skyrocket overnight, but in
terms of increases in materials, we should expect delays, price bumps, or tighter margins. The
industry has already experienced material shortages, inflation, supply chain slowdowns, and
PIRATES.
In lieu of the Canadian Federal election, especially in times of so much uncertainty, we will have
to see the direction Canada is steered in. But we have hope for a stronger focus on housing
affordability and economic stability.
For those Aging-in-Place renovations, now is actually a great time to consider your renovation.
With new Federal leadership going full speed ahead, there are several rebates and grants to offset
the costs of accessibility upgrades that could help you, and we can assist you in navigating that,
too.
